BLAESS™ LAB

BLAESS™ Lab is a multi-disciplinary design studio with projects ranging from transport design to modular housing and architectural building systems, product, furniture and lighting design, multi-unit residential, prime and super-prime private residential commissions.

First established in Sydney, Australia in 1999, the studio is now based in central London with projects located in continental Europe, the Middle East and the United Kingdom.

Exposure to a broad range of industry typologies allows BLAESS™ to integrate into projects core design principles involved in technology and communications, structural engineering, materials and manufacturing processes, environmental sustainability and design psychology.
Cross pollination and shared methodologies are employed where applicable to offer new solutions to client's projects that artfully demonstrate balanced aesthetic, economic and environmentally aware solutions.

Specialist concept design and design engineering skills have been successfully integrated on a number of projects.

  • Principles of factory manufactured and site assembled modular building solutions has been applied to projects with Nexis Holdings and their Waste to Panel recycled building products. www.nexisholdings.com
  • Concept design for flat pack interior fit-out panelling and inflatable heavy duty furniture solutions for Space Island Group. www.spaceislandgroup.com
  • In 1996, a design and manufacturing alliance was founded to form PinkusBlaess Pty Limited. The company was established to design, manufacture and supply specialist personal hygiene products to Johnson&Johnson globally. Over 11 million units of medical grade plastic containers were sold and distributed throughout USA, France, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
  • Industrial production technologies were used to create cost effective iconic mass produced rotational molded polyethylene modular bins for a chain of retail clean-skin wine stores. The modular bins were used as in-store point of sale units with built in product display, individual wine tasting stands and for off site product launches at trade shows and industry events.

The opportunity to improve and innovate using design as a tool is paramount to the BLAESS™ philosophy.

STEVEN BLAESS

Steven Blaess grew up in the unique environment of the Great Australian Bight. It was somewhere between the open, uninterrupted beauty of the bush and coastal landscapes where Steven formed an unconscious awareness to his environment. His purpose to create forms and spaces that express simplified beauty and freedom within form is displayed in all of his designs.

Steven graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Human Environments from the University of South Australia in 1994.
Over the past two decades, Steven has lived and worked in Europe, Asia, Middle East and Australia. His work extends across industrial design for transport, products, lighting, furniture, plastics manufacturing, architecture and interiors.

Steven Blaess' work is extensively manufactured and prototyped by leading brands such as Alessi, Edra, Artemide, iGuzzini Lighting Italy, Fratelli Guzzini, Nemo Italiana Luce and others. His long-standing relationships with these companies continue to flourish, bringing him exciting new projects and commissions.

Highlight projects in recent years include: final selection for his Olympic Torch design proposal for Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the m-series Meditation Pod manufactured by Edra, the globally successful Marli series of products for Alessi, plastic personal hygiene containers designed and manufactured for Johnson&Johnson worldwide, earth orbiting hotel and research facility concepts for Space Island Group, waste-to-panel recycled modular housing and building paneling system for Eisenmann and Nexis Holdings.

Current projects include private jet interiors, private residential commissions, a limited edition series of furniture and a new range of products and furniture for children.

'The products I create are not treated as design objects, but symbology as form that contain their own harmonic meaning and sacred energy.'
